What are dentures?

Dentures replace your natural teeth. They’re custom oral prosthetics made from materials like acrylic, nylon, or plastic. In addition to replacing missing teeth, dentures restore the structure of your jaw and preserve your oral health. What’s more, they’re generally more affordable than dental implants.

What are the types of dentures?

Partial dentures

If you’ve lost some teeth due to cavities or oral trauma, Dr. Nguyen might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures look similar to an oral retainer. They feature a wireframe base, several artificial teeth, and artificial gums. Partial dentures connect to small metal clasps bonded to your existing healthy teeth.  

Complete dentures

If you’ve lost all of your permanent teeth, Dr. Nguyen recommends complete dentures. Complete dentures rest on your natural gum tissue and restore an entire row of teeth. To prevent your dentures from moving, you apply an adhesive to the bottom.

Snap-on dentures

If you don’t want to worry about removing your dentures each night and soaking them, consider snap-on dentures. Snap-on dentures are like complete dentures, but instead of applying an adhesive to the bottom, they attach to dental implants. 

What does getting dentures involve?

At Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks, getting dentures takes two or three appointments, depending on the type of dentures you get.

Partial or complete dentures

If you elect to get partial or complete dentures,Dr. Nguyen takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory. The technicians at the laboratory use your impressions to design and create a custom set of dentures that fit your mouth perfectly.

Snap-on dentures

Getting snap-on dentures takes a little more time. First, Dr. Nguyen inserts a series of titanium posts into your jaw. When the posts integrate with your bone several months later, you return to the office, and Dr. Nguyen takes impressions of your mouth.

He sends your impressions to a laboratory and the technicians use them to design and create a set of custom snap-on dentures. When the lab finishes, you return to Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks, and Dr. Nguyen attaches them to your implants.
