Crowns Q&A

What are crowns?

Crowns are dental restorations bonded on top of a decaying or severely damaged tooth. Once positioned, they cover the entire portion of enamel above the gum line, improving your biting and chewing abilities.

Thanks to technological advances, most modern crowns are tooth-colored. The materials mimic the shade and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel, ensuring they blend in with your smile.

When are dental crowns needed?

At Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks, Dr. Amria uses crowns to:

  • Attach to dental implants
  • Protect weak teeth
  • Make cosmetic modifications
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Support teeth with large fillings

You might also benefit from a crown if you experience oral trauma and severely crack or chip a tooth.

What does getting crowns involve?

At Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks, getting crowns takes two appointments about a week apart.

First appointment

During your initial consultation, Dr. Amria conducts an oral exam and takes oral X-rays. She uses the X-rays to assess the extent of the damage or decay affecting your tooth.

After developing a treatment plan, Dr. Amria administers a local anesthetic and removes the damaged or decaying portion of your enamel.

Next, she takes impressions of your tooth and sends them to a dental laboratory. The technicians at the dental laboratory use your impressions to design and create a custom dental crown.

Second appointment

You return to Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks about a week later, when the laboratory finishes your crown. Dr. Amria administers a local anesthetic, bonds the crown on top of your tooth, polishes it, and provides care instructions.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns last an average of 10-15 years*, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan. Dr. Amria recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting Bella Vita Dentistry at Glade Parks every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To protect your crowns from damage, avoid bad habits like biting your nails, chewing on ice, or opening packaging with your teeth.
